William Um is a Partner in the Insurance Recovery and Commercial Trial practice groups who specializes in complex business litigation, insurance coverage advice and related coverage litigation. He has advised and represented Fortune 500 companies, small businesses and individuals faced with substantial insurance coverage disputes involving, among other things, class actions, media liability, environmental contamination, directors and officers liability, asbestos and silicosis liability and various toxic tort matters. Mr. Um also has handled general business litigation matters, involving complex commercial contracts, fraud and misrepresentation claims, and unfair competition and unfair business practices.

He has extensive experience in major, multiparty complex litigation matters in both state and federal courts. In addition to trial work, Mr. Um has obtained several multimillion-dollar arbitration awards and successfully negotiated numerous complex settlements. Mr. Um was one of the trial counsel who obtained one of the largest defense fee arbitration awards in California.

In 2006, he was recognized by Law & Politics magazine and Los Angeles magazine as a "Southern California Super Lawyer Rising Star" in the field of Insurance Coverage.

Representative Highlights

  • Insurance coverage for human rights cases. Acted as counsel for Unocal Corporation, Union Oil Company of California and Chevron Corporation in a complex insurance recovery action seeking coverage for liability arising from alleged human rights violations in connection with the construction of a gas pipeline in Burma.
  • Royal Indemnity Company, Inc. v. Intermix Media, Inc. Served as counsel for Intermix Media, Inc. seeking to enforce liability coverage rights relating to numerous underlying class action security matters.
  • Legal Malpractice Representation. Representation of large international law firm in complex action involving negligence claims for failure to obtain insurance coverage for a previous litigation matter.
