Managing Partner and CEO
Robert Ruyak was appointed Managing Partner and CEO of Howrey in January 2000 and serves as Chairman of the firm's Executive Committee. With a national reputation, Mr. Ruyak is one of the firm's most experienced and respected jury trial lawyers. Cases he has tried cover a wide range of legal and substantive areas, principally antitrust (both civil and criminal), intellectual property (including patent, trademark and trade secret), insurance coverage, international trade and a variety of commercial disputes. Throughout his career, he has been a proponent of and pioneer in the use of computer technology in litigation.
A Partner at Howrey since 1981, Mr. Ruyak has extensive litigation and jury trial experience covering a wide range of commercial disputes and substantive areas of law. His experience encompasses matters involving computer hardware, software, semiconductors, telecommunications, medical devices, chemicals, food, steel, paper, transportation, heavy equipment and automobiles, among others. He specializes in managing and trying complex cases, representing plaintiffs as well as defendants.
Mr. Ruyak also is a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars addressing the protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights, jury trial strategy and tactics, and the use of technology in litigation.
Representative Highlights
- Wang Laboratories, Inc. v. Toshiba Corp. Served as lead trial counsel in Wang’s successful SIMM patent infringement suits relating to Wang SIMM memory module patents that resulted in a jury verdict against NEC and Toshiba for infringement, a finding of patent validity and an injunction against the defendants prohibiting them from selling infringing products in the US, (Civ. Action No. 90-1477A, E.D. Va., 1991) and on appeal at the Federal Circuit.
- In re Lower Lake Erie Iron Ore Antitrust Litigation. As lead trial counsel representing LTV and Wheeling-Pittsburgh steel companies in the lower Lake Erie Iron Ore antitrust litigation, a multidistrict antitrust case, obtained jury verdicts and judgments in excess of $500 million. These were upheld on appeal; and certiorari was denied by the US Supreme Court.
- US v. International Paper Co. Acted as trial counsel defending the Mead Corporation in a criminal antitrust price-fixing case, in which Mead won an acquittal, and in the related class action trial of In re Corrugated Container Antitrust Litigation, 1979 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 7829 (S.D. Tex. 1979), aff'd in part and remanded in part, 643 F.2d 195, 1981 U.S. App. LEXIS 14634 (5th Cir. 1981).
