HOWREY NAMED TO AMERICAN LAWYER’S A-LIST AND NATIONAL LAW JOURNAL’S “DEFENSE HOT LIST”
09/07/2005
Howrey LLP has again been ranked as one of the top firms in the United States by two leading legal surveys. The American Lawyer’s A-List -- a listing of the nation’s elite law firms marked by revenues, pro bono performance, associate satisfaction, and workplace diversity, and National Law Journal’s “Defense Hot List”—a list of ten firms that performed exemplary defense work on behalf of their clients, have both recognized Howrey.
For the second consecutive year, The American Lawyer has named twenty firms “the best of the best” among the nation’s top law firms. Howrey was ranked 16th with exceptionally high scores in diversity as well as pro bono activity. Howrey was also named one of the top ten firms nationwide for pro bono activity in the same issue.
The National Law Journal’s first ever “Defense Hot List” ranked firms with “an overall impressive track record that scored at least one significant defense win within the past twelve months”—Howrey had three:
- Syngenta Seeds Inc. v. Monsanto Co., No. 04-908-SLR (D. Del. 2005), lead attorneys John Lynch, Susan Knoll and Steven Spears. Howrey represented Monsanto Co. in a patent infringement case brought by Syngenta Seeds Inc. over insect-protected corn and prevailed. The court ruled that two of the patents were not infringed and found the remaining one invalid. Syngenta Seeds is a major market competitor to Monsanto in the field of genetically altered seeds.
- Federal Trade Commission v. Arch Coal Inc., 320 F. Supp. 2d 109 (D.D.C. 2004), lead attorneys William Bradford Reynolds and Roxann Henry. Howrey defeated the Federal Trade Commission's challenge of Arch Coal's acquisition of Triton Coal Co. Arch Coal provides 6% of the country's energy and Triton Coal owns North Rochelle Mine in Wyoming, the second most productive mine in the United States. The attorneys general of six states joined the commission in opposing the acquisition on antitrust grounds.
- Federal Trade Commission v. Schering-Plough Corp., No. 04-10688-AA (11th Cir. 2005), lead attorney John Nields. When the commission challenged Schering-Plough on two patent litigation settlements with manufacturers of generic versions of the company's potassium chloride product, Schering-Plough prevailed before the agency's administrative law judge. The FTC appealed, and the decision was reversed. Howrey appealed the case on behalf of Schering-Plough to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, resulting in a unanimous decision that completely reversed the FTC on all issues.
In making their selection of top defense firms, the NLJ looked for litigation firms that shaped and/or added to the foundation of the practice of law.
National Law Journal’s report noted the depth of Howrey’s antitrust and intellectual property capabilities.
