“Howrey has hired competition partner Shaun Goodman from Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP, where he was a partner in the London office.
“Goodman, 39, has a broad practice encompassing all aspects of European and UK competition law, including the crossover between competition and intellectual property. He joined Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP in 2002 from Slaughter and May, becoming a partner in 2006.”
“Goodman says he was attracted to Howrey by its emphasis on both antitrust and litigation. ‘As London [emerges] as the main forum for competition litigation in Europe, Howrey’s dual skill set, together with its demonstrated commitment to a deeply resourced London practice, provide a terrific launch pad for the future,’ he says.”
“He says competition-related litigation accounts for around half of his caseload. He has also worked on several cases involving competition law and sector regulation, especially in the financial services and communications sectors, and plans to further develop this aspect of his practice at Howrey.
“‘Tom [McQuail] (LO) and I will also look to build on our existing exposure to the regulated sectors by each maintaining a greater specialism and focus than either of us could achieve individually,’ he says.”
Trevor Soames, who heads Howrey’s EU competition practice in Brussels, says: ‘When we set up the London antitrust practice 18 months ago with Tom McQuail, we had always intended to expand it further. Shaun is top quality, with great experience in all areas of UK and EU antitrust—especially litigation, which is an aspect of the practice that we’re very keen to develop.”’
“Soames says Goodman will continue to work on both EU and UK competition law. Howrey’s London competition practice now has two partners, four associates and one part-time partner who spends time in both London and Brussels.”
