Our Law Firm

Pro Bono

Justice for All

A law firm cannot exist apart from its community. There is a responsibility that attaches to the legal profession: to serve the cause of justice for all, not only for those who can afford it. Howrey has always held a strong commitment to providing legal representation to those who would otherwise be denied access to justice. With each pro bono engagement, we strengthen the individual threads of the fabric that connects us as local and global communities.

Howrey’s Total Commitment

We are proud to be among the original law firms to support the Law Firm Pro Bono Challenge, which calls on law firms to devote a percentage of their billable hours every year to pro bono matters. Howrey treats pro bono hours as fully billable hours of credit for our attorneys.

In 2006, we provided more than 45,000 hours of free legal assistance to approximately 250 clients, all of whom have inspired us to work more diligently, argue more creatively and advocate more rigorously on their behalf. Through partnerships with the numerous legal services providers in our cities, we represented low-income clients who were fighting to preserve what many take for granted: their homes, their jobs, their health and their families. Our attorneys also worked on larger-scale cases that could impact the rights of thousands of people.
“I have an irrepressible desire to live till I can be assured that the world is a little better for my having lived in it.” – Abraham Lincoln

Faith in the Justice System

In all of these cases, our goal is to provide our clients with the highest-quality representation. Often our clients emerge from these cases with their rights affirmed, their voices heard and their faith in the justice system renewed. At the same time, our attorneys and staff also gain from these experiences: the ability to work one-on-one with a client whose basic livelihood is at stake; the chance to advocate on his or her behalf before some of the most esteemed tribunals in the land; and a deeper understanding of the obligation legal professionals have to our communities. We will continue to work tirelessly to improve our communities.
