Partner
Carl De Meyer is a Partner and head of intellectual property at Howrey's Brussels office. Recognised as one of Europe's foremost IP lawyers, he specialises in patent, trade mark and copyright litigation.
Carl’s broad experience covers national and international patent litigation, and all aspects of trademarks and copyrights, as well as unfair competition and competition law. He represents clients in all major industry sectors, in particular pharmaceutical and biotech companies, food manufacturers, toy manufacturers, publishers, producers of electronic equipment and other consumer product manufacturers. Among others, he obtained a landmark decision relating to a 3D Community trademark and has also conducted a number of high-profile cross border patent infringement cases.
"What makes Howrey special is its dedication for excellence in IP and competition law, and our cross-the-board litigation capacity. I don't believe there are other firms that can offer clients in both the US and Europe so much expertise in these three highly specialised areas of law. Howrey's ambition to have the leading practitioners in all the jurisdictions where we are present is our credo."
Representative Highlights
- Avery Dennison v. 3M. Howrey represents Avery Dennison against 3M in multijurisdictional patent infringement proceedings. The case entails novel jurisdictional issues in relation to EU patents owned by US companies (ongoing).
- Mega Brands v. Lego. Howrey successfully represented Mega Brands before the EU “Enlarged Board of Appeals of OHIM” in Alicante in a cancellation action against Lego's 3D trademark covering the basic eight-stud brick, the centre element in the well-known construction toy system. The 2006 decision was the first decision by the Board and was a widely-followed, high-profile case. Mega Brands enjoyed a complete victory. The case is now pending before the CFI in Luxembourg (ongoing).
- Philips & Inbev v. Heineken. Howrey has successfully represented both Philips and Inbev in the multiple-jurisdiction litigation regarding the PerfectDraft patent infringement action brought by Heineken (2006 - 2007).
