Paul Clarkson is a Partner in Howrey's Amsterdam office. He is qualified as a European and British patent attorney. Mr. Clarkson has a general engineering background (covering mechanical engineering, electronics and material science) and is involved in all aspects of the patent procurement practice, including applying for patents and conducting oppositions. He advises clients across a broad range of industries covering agriculture and life sciences. Paul also handles applications with the US Patent and Trademark Office together with our US patent attorneys for various clients.
Before joining Howrey in 2001, Mr. Clarkson worked for 14 years as an examiner with the European Patent Office. His knowledge of the internal procedures at the EPO provides a major contribution to the efficiency of Howrey's patent practice. As an examiner, he specialized in the field of medical equipment.
Representative Highlights
- Procurement of IP rights. Provides patentability searches and evaluations, drafting of patent applications and representation of clients before the various patent offices. Clients are also represented in opposition proceedings and appeals before the EPO and re-examination, reissue and appeal proceedings before the USPTO. Clients Mr. Clarkson represents include Lely Enterprises, Ten Cate Advanced Textiles, Organon, and Gillette.
- Competitor and market analysis. Monitors and analyzes client competitors' patenting behavior and provides freedom to operate advice and product clearance. Represents clients as well in oppositions, re-examination and appeals before the EPO and USPTO against third party patents that may impede the client's freedom to operate. Clients Mr. Clarkson represents in this field include Lely, Oxycell Holding and Pinlock.
- IP counselling. Based on thorough IP portfolio analyses, provides IP portfolio management and strategy advice to clients. Additionally, Mr. Clarkson offers clients IP valuation advice and IP pledging services to maximise return on investment and detect financing opportunities. A client he represents in this field include Oxycell Holding.
