Committed to Managing our Associate Talent

"Associate professional development is an increasingly important part of attracting and retaining the best talent, equipping associates with all the skills they need to be successful in their careers." – Heather Bock, Chief Professional Development Officer

We take professional development seriously at Howrey. During the early years of an associate’s career, we offer several multi-day academies that bring our attorneys together for intensive, practical training. Our award-winning Howrey U is filled with e-learning courses spanning the scope of the legal realm. And our attorneys receive individualized attention at the local level from a training partner in each office.

In addition to this extensive training program, new associates gain client initiation experience though our Howrey First Tier™ Training Program and hone their skills through work on pro bono cases. Associates earn full billable credit for hours spent on firm-approved pro bono cases, and attorney performance on pro bono matters is reviewed annually through the competency-based evaluation process.

Another way to build skills and make a contribution to the firm includes shadowing partners. Associates can shadow or observe partners through all the stages of a case. Investment hours also allow associates to make non-billable contributions to the firm and to further their development at Howrey.

Our Focus on Development Has Its Awards

Our commitment to ongoing education starts at the top. Howrey CEO and Managing Partner Robert Ruyak and Chief Professional Development Officer Heather Bock co-authored a book entitled Constructing Core Competencies: Using Competency Models to Manage Firm Talent. Bock received a Vanguard Award from Chief Learning Officer magazine for leading change in the legal industry.

Howrey has received the BEST Award from the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD), which is given to organizations “who set the standard of excellence for exceptional learning practices in their organization.” In addition, Howrey U has received the NALP Annual Award of Distinction for training and development and the Association for Continuing Legal Education (ACLEA) John Day Memorial Award for Professional Excellence in Technology.
