Committed to Managing our Associate Talent Howrey understands that managing the talent of our attorneys requires offering signature work experiences. This includes best-in-class training combined with on-the-job learning experiences such as pro bono opportunities and case assignments. Through a dedicated professional development department, Howrey guides the learning and development from an associate’s first day at the firm and continues to provide valuable learning opportunities all the way through to the partner level. Our professional development team creates and administers educational programming designed to keep Howrey attorneys at the top of their profession. Consisting of sixteen skills and behaviors a Howrey attorney must possess to be successful, our continuing education is geared towards achieving excellence in the firm’s core competency model.
Howrey U: Designed for Flexibility and Opportunities for Learning Howrey’s online virtual university, "Howrey U," is the comprehensive center of educational resources for our attorneys and staff. Here our attorneys are able to manage their training proactively and on their own time as they progress through their core competencies. Howrey U’s most useful tool is its voluminous library of e-learning courses made up of presentations given by both in-house and outside experts. Howrey also offers a full-time writing instructor who conducts seminars on all aspects of the writing process and offers one-on-one coaching with attorneys. "Associate professional development is an increasingly important part of attracting and retaining the best talent, equipping associates with all the skills they need to be successful in their careers." – Heather Bock, Chief Professional Development Officer Associate Training: Supported from Day One Howrey is focused on providing our associates with the right environment to grow and develop. Associates are offered ongoing education opportunities from their first day at orientation. Learning continues with courses covering topic such as writing fundamentals, deposition training, trial skills, and even business development and managing client relationships. When Howrey attorneys go to court, we ensure they always have the tools and skills they need to succeed.
Our Focus on Development Has Its AwardsOur aim is to be a thought-leader in professional development for associates. And we’re pleased that our goal has shown results not only with our attorneys but also with outside groups, who’ve presented our professional development team and curriculum with numerous awards. We were presented with the prestigious American Society for Training and Development BEST award in 2007, given to organizations “who set the standard of excellence for exceptional learning practices,” and in 2006 Howrey U received the NALP Annual Award of Distinction for training and development.
In fact, our commitment to ongoing education starts at the top: our Chief Professional Development Officer Heather Bock won the 2007 CLO award for leading change in the legal industry and co-authored a book with firm CEO and Managing Partner Robert Ruyak entitled Constructing Core Competencies: Using Competency Models to Manage Firm Talent. We take Professional Development seriously at Howrey.
