Making the Successful Move While many of our associates start their careers at Howrey directly from law school or after completing judicial clerkships, a large number join the firm after serving in government positions, working in-house or from other law firms. They choose Howrey because they know they will have the opportunity to work on significant matters for clients who are industry leaders. Excellent Career Support Our goal is to turn great associates into outstanding partners. We want associates who understand the importance of taking ownership of their careers. However, that doesn’t mean going it alone. Howrey associates are supported by their supervising partner, the Associate Career Management team and our Professional Development staff, working together so each associate gains the experiences and skills to be an outstanding attorney.
Investing in each associate’s career is important to us. Our Supervising Partner Program pairs every associate with a partner who is involved in that associate's individual career development and who can provide the on-going career guidance and insight that comes from experience. Supervising partners help lateral associates integrate into the firm and assist associates in assessing assignments, professional development, pro bono and training opportunities.
Our Professional Development team works with our associates from their first day at Howrey and continues to offer support at the partner level. Through a series of award-winning in-house courses, workshops and online learning at "Howrey U" and the Howrey Academies, associates receive on-going training and feedback in the core competencies that are necessary to succeed at Howrey. Each associate has an individualized development plan to help that associate build core competencies. Our Associate Career Management team helps guide associates through the development and implementation of their individual career plans, recognizing that each individual has unique goals and life situations
All of this combines to form an associate-centered approach that places emphasis on the individual and provides our associates with a platform for successful professional and career development.
The Hiring Process For most experienced lateral attorneys, the interview process consists of meeting with at least three partners in a specific practice area. This allows both the candidates and Howrey partners an opportunity for broad candid exchange and ensures that we quickly respond to candidates and offer positions to qualified applicants. We also encourage candidates to learn more about the firm through meetings with our associates and professional staff.
Further OpportunityHowrey has taken the lead in refining the relationship between associate professional development and career progression. Our unique program allows an associate the freedom to excel outside the traditional boundaries of class-year and to be rewarded for individual excellence.
