Karen Lockwood has led and managed complex commercial trials, arbitrations and appeals for nearly thirty years. She has served as coordinating counsel for multijurisdictional litigation and has frequently managed complex litigation with multiple teams, coordinating the activities of firm, in-house and local counsel to achieve successful outcomes.
Ms. Lockwood’s commercial litigation experience encompasses contract, tort and statutory claims across a wide variety of industries and causes of action. She is experienced in counseling and negotiations in a wide variety of commercial matters, including telecommunications, contract and tort issues, and also practices arbitration and alternative dispute resolution.
Ms. Lockwood’s style of practice is grounded in her creativity in pursuit of “the core of the matter”—both the source of the dispute and the keys to resolution. Representative Highlights
- GTE. Represented general counsel in connection with arbitrations under 1996 Telecommunications Act; advised on corporate position in hundreds of CLEC/ILEC arbitrations nationwide; coordinated implementation of policy on arbitration positions with regional corporate counsel; worked with GTE in-house technical experts while developing corporate positions; supervised team of over fifteen outside counsel. Negotiated interconnection agreements, drafted standardized terms for use by client’s teams of negotiators.
- DuPont Plaza Hotel Fire Litigation. Multidistrict litigation in Puerto Rico involving 2.500 plaintiffs and over 250 defendants, suspension of Rule 56 by the trial judge after the filing of motion for summary judgment. Intensive investigation and research, strategic judgment in positioning defendant for successful disposition, retaining and working with preeminent HVAC expert witness, taking mandamus petition to First Circuit.
- Mobil Chemical Co. Coordinating counsel for nine simultaneous suits by State Attorneys General on claims of false advertising related to design and sell of degradable trash bags; designed and wrote winning brief defeating federal question under the RICO statute in Brittingham v. Mobil Chemical Co., 943 F.2d 297 (3d Cir. 1991).
